The Altar Society

Have you wondered who works behind the scenes, taking care of all the details that keep the Church linens, brass, etc. looking clean and beautiful? Who washes and irons altar linens?  Who removes wax and polishes candleholders? Who dusts the altar, ambo, and piano? Who keeps the sanctuary clean and tidy? We are blessed with a group of lovely, faithful ladies who quietly and efficiently take care of our church.

Over a dozen women take turns washing, starching and ironing the altar linens each week and, every Friday morning before Mass, four of the women work at cleaning the candles, polishing the brass, washing the windows and dusting the piano and organ.

The current coordinator of the Altar Society is Jo Baroni .( Jo has also been the Daily Mass Sacristan since 1992, and helps set up for many funerals in the church.) The Altar Linens are sewn by members of the Sewing Guild, listed at left.

Decades of Service through the Altar Society

Some members of our Altar Society have been caring for the church linens, polishing the brass, and cleaning candles since before the current church was built (in the early 50s). Former member, Gina Bedoni (pictured at right) remembers working in the original church, which was located on San Carlos Street. She recalled that one of their most difficult duties from times past was the weekly cleaning of all the small vigil candles that were lit in front of the statues. (When the church was renovated, these little vigil candles were seen as a fire hazard and no longer permitted in the church.) Before the renovation, there were also candelabras on the high altar by the Tabernacle that needed frequent cleaning and polishing.

Over the years, many members of the Altar Society have passed away. While there are still a number of women who help launder the linens each week, only a handful of ladies are willing and able to clean and polish the church on Friday mornings before Mass.

Many hands make light work and more help is always needed. If you would be interested in serving the church in this way, please call the Liturgy Office at 289-9617, extension 18.
